Angiotech Cleanroom

Angiotech, a pharmaceutical specialty and medical device manufacturer, uses its Reading, Pennsylvania, plant to assemble and package sterile, disposable scalpels and surgical needles with attached sutures. High humidity in the cleanrooms would not only encourage bacterial growth, it would prematurely degrade a type of moisture-activated suture that is designed to slowly dissolve in human flesh after healing. Low humidity, on the other hand, would promote static electricity, which would interfere with computerized packaging and labeling equipment and expose employees to electrical shock.

Bob Reichenbach, service manager for The Warko Group in Reading and an experienced APR Controls installer, proposed adding the device to the air conditioning systems serving the cleanrooms. The APR Controls were installed during a plant holiday shutdown. The application helped stabilize and reduce dramatic changes in humidity levels that were impacting the productivity of the space.
