Selecting the Right APR Control Product: Application Example (R-410A)
When selecting the appropriate APR Control Product for your DX HVAC system, it’s essential to consider the system’s specific configuration. Below, we’ve provided a detailed table showcasing how we choose the right APR Control for a 5-ton DX unit, whether it’s a packaged or split system.

The table outlines two scenarios:
- Single-Stage Compressor:
- For a 5-ton DX unit with a single-stage compressor, we recommend applying an APR-410-3. This configuration allows for up to 70% turndown (capacity modulation).
- The system operates at full capacity (5 tons) when needed but gains the ability to modulate down to 1.5 tons, covering all intermediate points seamlessly.
- Dual-Stage Compressor:
- For a 5-ton DX unit with a dual-stage compressor and a 3.5-ton lead stage, we recommend applying an APR-410-2.
- Since the lead stage ramps down to 3.5 tons, the APR Control is sized for that tonnage. This setup achieves up to 80% turndown, enabling the system to operate from 5 tons down to 1 ton, including all intermediate points.
APR Control Key Insights:
The recommended APR Control Product tonnage will never equal the system or compressor tonnage. This ensures maximum modulation while avoiding compressor termination, allowing for effective capacity reduction without compromising oil entrainment.
